Head, Thorax and Abdomen.

We now know the parts of an insects body...the head, thorax and abdomen. We also know that insects have 6 legs, so guess what?......spiders are not insects! The thorax is where the legs are attached to the insects body and the abdomen is where they breathe from. Insects don't have a nose but they smell, feel and taste through their antennae. Some interesting facts being learnt at school about insects.
We had some very large insects to look at in class...(don't worry they were all plastic) we were able to find each of the insects body parts on these plastic insects.

Learning to play Tennis

Today we were learning some Tennis skills with Ngaire. We learnt how to balance the ball on our racquet, how to stop the ball on the ground, how to make the ball go around the flat racquet and how to hit the ball over the net.

Measurement

This week for maths we have been comparing the volume of different containers by pouring from one to the other. We used this comparison of containers to order from some that held the least, to the most.
In the beginning we read the story of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. We were then given the task of finding three different containers for the bears in many different scenarios.
This was a fun way of learning about volume. The biggest learning was the fact that just because a container looks bigger it doesn't mean it will hold more for example.... some very wide bowls didn't hold as much rice bubbles as smaller taller ones....and some tall drink bottles didn't hold as much water as some shorter wider ones.

Living or Non Living

Before we take the plunge into this terms unit......"Mini beasts" we did a classification activity to ensure we knew exactly what  a Living thing is.
We worked with a buddy and had to put some pictures under the right heading "Living" or "Non Living". The results of this activity then lead us to research what characteristics living things have and we had further conversation about what a living thing actually is.....We now know that a Living thing has to: Grow or move, Reproduce, (have babies) Breathe, and needs Food or Water.
Now we can very confidently categorise the pictures in the correct place.
Have a listen to Leah, Sebastian and Zion's Fotobabbles explaining this new learning.

Children's choice Discovery Time.

Today was our last Discovery Time for term 2 and it was left up to the children to decide what activities we did...they chose:  Lego (no surprise there), Making snowflakes, Cars and ice block sticks, Construction with boxes and Marble tracks.
Our focus was on giving compliments and taking turns. There were some lovely compliments being giving out throughout the morning, and the children are very good at making sure other people get a turn and they all share very well.
